I've been drumming for over 12 years on a drum set, primarily in a church setting. And though this book doesn't specifically teach you how to play the drum SET better, it will definitely provide that foundation for you to build off of. It contains so many permutations of practices that one should be able to practice with this book for their entire life time, varying up the styles. No doubt the Holy Grail of drum technique books!

This is literally just a huge list of rhythmic patterns. For the drummer who sits with his practice pad and thinks 'ok, now what?', this book answers that question with pages upon pages of exercises that steadily increase in complexity. Some people may ask 'how do I use this?'. Easy! Open it up, get your metronome out and start practicing! No excuses!

As anyone who's used it knows, this book can be somewhat dry and, after many, many hours of practice, it can become an object of hate just like an old High School Chemistry textbook. However, there is a reason that it is the "industry standard" and that is because the exercises within it will make you a better drummer, with the application of perseverance. It is suitable for all levels, including the complete beginner, providing you can understand and follow the notation. This is the third copy of this book that I have purchased as it remains a relevant tool ........... the other two copies were burnt after graduation!!

Love this book. It's easy to follow. My drum teacher loves it too. He remembers using it when he was a kid. Great for practicing, for warm-ups, for hand coordination. It starts with easy exercises then gets more and more complicated. My teacher was able to help with the more difficult parts. The hardest part is discplining yourself to do the exercises. I would highly recommend it to beginners like me.

I’m not a drummer but I really have great sense of rhythm. I use the exercises with sticks and it has really improved my bongo/djembe skills. Even noticed some carry over to the bass guitar. Once your hands are accustomed to the patterns more complex rhythms flow a lot more easily

Love the exercises but as someone who uses just practice pads and basically is learning sticks as a supplement to add another dimension in my drum circle, need to have someone show me closed, short rolls, etc as I can't figure out a number of exercises and how they played. However, what I have learned has given me some sound fundamentals my hands getting faster as I couple this with some videos and other material. In essence get am instructor, and when up to speed, tackle this book and you will find it effective. Legendary writing in drumming as the preface and the quotes from many of one's idols indicates.

What distinguishes a truly talented drummer from a mediocre drummer?Deliberate intent.Control is part of the title of this book. Control is what the drummer must seek to acquire, to master and to execute. Though the exercises in this book may seem mundane, and even repeat some of the 40 fundamental rudiments, that is precisely the point: deliberate intent; to hit the drum in exactly the way and with exactly the stick you intend. No accidentals here, no serendipity here (though serendipity in the discovery of new and cool stuff is always a bonus!).Yes, it's "boring" if that's how you choose to approach this. But, no, it is not boring at all, it is a guide into controlling what stick hits the drum, how many times in a row it hits the drum, and to ensure a consistency between left and right starting points so as to create a symmetry of ability, start with the right or the left and you should not suffer weakness in either. Consistent "tone" and volume control so both sticks sound the same attack. And all must be done in a relaxed, tension free state. Sounds easy... but takes time to master.I make all my students go through this. I go through this myself. One exercise I assign is to do a given drill starting slow and even, then slowly speed it up without losing where you are and reverting to something more "comfortable" as you speed up. To ensure this, I encourage accenting the beat note to keep you centered and focused on the signature of the specific drill. While they're all the same note value, the form of the drill, one from another, differs enough to make it necessary as part of the point: deliberate intent.Got it? Now get this one and start to gain the control you dream about... that you may not even be aware you need.

GREAT book for all drummers, beginners an pro's alike. Has been said to be one of the greatest drum books out there and I agree. This book has exercises to strengthen technique, increase, speed, increase the control you use with your fingers and wrist, and over time just boost your overall playing performance. Don't just go through each exercise play it once and move on though; to get the most of this book follow instructions and play each exercise 20 times then move on to the next one etc. A must own for all drummers.

What can I say about this? It has been around since 1932 and has been the staple for snare drummers. I hated it at first but it does teach you stick control and lead hand control. Very repetitive but that’s how you Develop muscle memory. Great book for learning it’s just very repetitive. My instructors been using it for over 20 years.
